Below, you’ll find a link to download a collection of the songs that sounded the best to me in 2011.

Some of them are loud, ignorant, and offensive. (Okay, a lot of them.) Some are insightful, tender, and lovely. (The cover art, if a bit misleading, leans that way.) A few are all of that, emerging sublime by the end of the track. Some are easy, some are hard. Many surprised the hell out of me. A few did wonders via earbuds in coffee shops, while others lose something if not blasted, rattling something silly. But they all worked.

There’s a lot of them — 99, and I didn’t even get to listen to all the music I wanted to this year. They’ll take you a while to download, and you won’t like all of them. If you’re offended by any, my apologies; skip ‘em and go to the next. Because I know you’ll find something you like, and probably find something you love. Collectively, and with hundreds more, these songs scored a year’s worth of hard work, late nights, road trips, pre-games, sidewalk runs, lazy afternoons, heartbreaks, and triumphs.

So to you, the good people of the only congregation I belong to — family, friends, people I love — I bid you this: have peace, strength, and goodness next year. Enjoy the mix. Music is the church. Amen.
